When it comes to cleaning your home, there are a number of safe and reliable cleaning solutions you can mix yourself in order to successfully clean any room or surface, but one of the most powerful common household cleaners is actually baking soda. Baking soda is very versatile in its uses and will surprise you in more ways than one. Here are six of the best ways to clean using baking soda!

Unclog a Drain

Is your shower drain clogged with hair? Or maybe your kitchen sink drain is getting choked with food scraps? No problem, because baking soda can be an effective way to unclog drains. To get rid of a clog, dump a cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by a cup of vinegar; if all goes as planned you should hear and even see that fizzling concoction eating away at whatever is stuffing your drain.

De-stain Plastic Food Containers

Your plastic food containers are easily stained and can start to smell over time. You can prevent this by using baking soda; simply sprinkle some into the stained container and scrub it away with a wet sponge. The baking soda should get those stains out of there for good and leave your containers looking like new.

Clean Your Oven

Baking soda is also a great way to clean your oven without the use of chemicals. Avoid the harsh smells of chemical cleaners and instead, use a paste of baking soda and lemon or lime juice, and then spread it over the surface of the inside of your oven. Let it sit for two or three hours and then wipe it away with a wet microfiber cloth. The paste you mixed will have left the stuck-on gunk looser and easier to wipe away.

Remove Mold and Mildew

Mold and mildew are never fun to discover in your home, so it’s good to know that a solution to this problem is easy to get your hands on. Fight mold and mildew by filling a spray bottle with vinegar and baking soda and then spray the affected surface. Leave it alone and let it sit for 5-7 minutes before scrubbing away at it with a toothbrush.

Erase Wall Markings

If you have kids, you know full well that they love to show you their creativity every so often by drawing on the walls or making some other kind of artwork in your home. Luckily, baking soda is very good at being a magic eraser! Dab some baking soda on a wet sponge and scrub away at any kind of wall markings and you’ll see them disappear.

Clean Your Sink

Over time, your kitchen sink may start to develop stains, such as from pouring too much coffee into it for example. You can combat this by using, you guessed it, baking soda. Start by placing a few drops of lavender essential oil into half a cup of baking soda, and then store it in a tightly-sealed container. When you’re ready, sprinkle this concoction into your sink and let it sit for 30 seconds before using a sponge to scrub away at any stains. Rinse with warm water, and then voila, your sink will be sparkling clean again.
