Whether you have bought new furniture to liven up your family room or if you have reupholstered your old furniture, keeping it in mint condition goes a long way to making your entire room look amazing! Follow these surefire tips if you are looking to keep your new upholstery in a great condition for a very long time!
Keep Your Upholstery Clean
Every week when you are vacuuming your floor, make some time to vacuum your furniture as well. Make sure you use a soft brush attachment to properly clean your furniture and make sure you get into the crevasses that have dirt and debris trapped inside them.
Every month or so, try to take the cushions outside and slap the dust out of them. This will ensure that very little dust gets stuck inside the fibres. When you put the cushions back on the furniture, flip and rotate them so that they last longer and wear evenly.
The best way to keep your upholstery clean is to not spill anything on it. Having rules like no eating or drinking while sitting on your newly upholstered furniture goes a long way in keeping them in pristine condition. Other things you can do to ensure you have a low risk of staining your upholstery is to keep your pets, shoes, and newspapers off of your furniture.
Removing Stains
If you have unfortunately spilled something on your newly upholstered furniture, you have to act fast! Deal with the spill before it is able to set in by blotting the stain with a paper towel or a cloth. If you rub the stain, you risk smudging the stain which will just make it bigger. Start by blotting the stain from the outside and work your way towards the centre.
If the stain is still present after you have blotted it, it’s time to break out a cleaning solution. You should be very careful when using a cleaning solution because if you use the wrong one, it could make the stain worse. Before using a cleaning solution on your upholstery, follow these steps:
- Read the manufacturer’s care label instructions. It should tell you what products you can use to clean the fabric. There will be a label that indicated S (solvents), W (water-based), WS (both water and solvents) or X (no cleaners should be used).
- Test the cleaner on a non-visible area of the furniture to see how it reacts with your upholstery. Check to see if there are any colour changes to the spot that you treated.
- Once you are confident you chose the right cleaning solution, apply it to the stain and blot it up with a cloth wetted with clean water.
Do a Deep Clean
Schedule a deep cleaning service for all of your soft furnishings once every year. If you have removable cushion covers and the instructions say you can wash them in a washing machine, turn them inside out and wash them in colder water to prevent the colours from fading.
